"Rings" is a 60-frame 24-bit ray-traced animation for the Picasso II board.
It was rendered using Imagine 2.9 and Essence I and II textures. The frames
were then scaled and composited onto a backdrop using ADPro 2.3.0. The final
animation was made using Magic Lantern.
I have included Terra Nova's freely distributable Magic Lantern DIFF player so
you can view the DIFF even if you are not a Magic Lantern owner. If you own
Magic Lantern and another supported graphics board, you can load the DIFF and
convert it to your own board's format. The frame rate is actually quite low,
so you should be able to view it on just about any machine with enough memory
(8 meg?). If you feel the need to create and release a version for one of
these other board, that's cool, as long as you don't change the frame rate or
resolution, and include this readme intact.
The raw frames were over half a meg each, and took over 1.5 hours each to
render on a 4000/40, due to both the need to ray-trace and the large number
of textures. In order to make something viewable in an 8 meg machine, I was
forced to shrink the frames to a mere 256x192 on a 384x240 backdrop.
Two archives make up "Rings": rings.lha and rings19.lha. If you own a
Picasso and have >= 8 meg of memory, get rings.lha and check it out. :-) If
you lack a Picasso or don't have the memory for this, or perhaps just want to
see what you're getting into before starting a horribly large download, grab
rings19.lha. It contains frame 19 of the animation, in 640x480 technicolor.
Oh, yes, this was originally inspired by a dumb chrome sphere animation I saw
on a PC once. I thought to myself "Gee, I can do better than that", and the
rest was history. :-)
These files may be freely re-distributed, as long as no more than media costs
are charged. Fred Fish and Walnut Creek are specifically permitted, if they
so wish. Others should write and ask.
